Nouna and Nouno Gifts: What Godparents Give at an Orthodox Christening
Being asked to be the nouna or nouno is an honour, and it comes with real responsibilities. In many Orthodox families, the godparent provides much of what's needed on the day, and stays a spiritual guide for life.
What godparents traditionally provide
Customs vary between families, parishes and backgrounds, so always ask the parents and your priest. Common items include:
- The cross the child receives
- Christening clothes and white outfit
- Candles and the oil and towels for the service
- Martyrika, the small witness pins for guests
A gift that lasts beyond the day
Many godparents also give a lasting keepsake with the child's name:
- A personalised Bible they'll grow into
- A personalised gold brush, comb and rattle set
- A personalised trinket box for the cross and pin
